Subject: Werner Rheinboldt turning 90 on September 18th, 2017
On September 18th this year Werner C. Rheinboldt, one of the pioneers
of numerical analysis, will turn 90. On the occasion of this
anniversary, I would like to draw the attention of the NA-Digest
readers to his outstanding scientific oeuvre. Three prominent examples are
His groundbreaking work on the numerical solution of systems of
nonlinear equations. Probably everybody in numerical analysis knows or
at least has heard of the book 'Solution of Nonlinear Equations in
Several Variables' by the late James M. Ortega and Werner
C. Rheinboldt. It appeared 1970 and was reprinted by SIAM in
2000. Meanwhile, 9993 citations have been counted for this seminal
work.
A posteriori error analysis for finite elements started with the paper
'Error estimates for adaptive finite element computations' by Ivo
Babuska and Werner C. Rheinboldt, SINUM 1978, which triggered an
avalanche of research in the following decades.
Werner C. Rheinboldt very early perceived the importance of geometry
in numerical analysis. Today, this has become crucial in fields such
as geometric numerical integration and isogeometric analysis. But
already in the 1980s he used concepts from differential geometry to
solve DAEs, as described in 'Differential-algebraic systems as
differential equations on manifolds', Math. Comp. 1984. His career
stations include the Universities of Heidelberg and Freiburg, the
National Bureau of Standards, the Universities of Syracuse and
Maryland, the University of Pittsburgh, and finally the TU Muenchen
where he became an honorary member of the Math Department after his
move back to Germany in 2007. He served as president of SIAM from 1976
to 1978 and was a member of various councils, among them the
Scientific Board of the Zuse Institute Berlin.
Speaking on behalf of numerical analysts worldwide, let me
congratulate and express our warm thanks to him for his outstanding
work, for his inspiration and for the deep insight that he shared with us.

Subject: SuiteSparse Matrix Collection relocated
The SuiteSparse Matrix Collection (formerly the Univ. of Florida
Sparse Matrix Collection) has moved. The new URL is
https://sparse.tamu.edu .
I have also created new Java and MATLAB interfaces to the collection,
in a package called ssget, which replaces UFget. The MATLAB function
ssget links to the sparse.tamu.edu URL, but I also have a new UFget
MATLAB function that calls ssget, so you can continue to use the old
name UFget in your MATLAB scripts, if you wish.
The matrices have not changed, and the UF site continues to be active.
However, new matrices will only be added to the sparse.tamu.edu
address.
Check out the https://sparse.tamu.edu website, which is completely
redesigned from the old site at UF. The new site was designed by my
PhD student, Scott Kolodziej, and several other students.

"Smooth Bezier Surfaces over Unstructured Meshes" published by
Springer, Lecture Notes of the Unione Matematica Italiane.
"An important contribution to a problem of considerable contemporary
interest" (T J R Hughes)
The extension of Isogeometric Analysis (IgA) over unstructred meshes
is crucial for the analysis of real life geometries. Using a mixture
of geometry, graph theory and linear analysis, the monograph
completely solves this problem for C1-surfaces defined over plane
bilinear Bezier patches .The corresponding results for B-Splines are
then a simple consequences. The book is a step forward in Isogeometric
Analysis and its applications. It provides a bridge between Finite
Element Methods and Isogeometric Analysis.

Subject: New Book, Fluid-Structure Interactions
"Fluid-structure Interactions. Models, Analysis and Finite Elements"
by Thomas Richter, Springer 2017, 1st Edition
This book starts by introducing the fundamental concepts of
mathematical continuum mechanics for fluids and solids and their
coupling. Special attention is given to the derivation of variational
formulations for the subproblems describing fluid- and solid-mechanics
as well as the coupled fluid-structure interaction problem. Two
monolithic formulations for fluid-structure interactions are described
in detail: the well-established ALE formulation and the modern Fully
Eulerian formulation, which can effectively deal with problems
featuring large deformation and contact. Further, the book provides
details on state-of-the-art discretization schemes for fluid- and
solid-mechanics and considers the special needs of coupled problems
with interface-tracking and interface-capturing techniques. Lastly,
advanced topics like goal-oriented error estimation, multigrid
solution and gradient-based optimization schemes are discussed in the
context of fluid-structure interaction problems.
The first parts of this book have a textbook character and are well
suited for lectures.

Subject: New Book, Intelligent Computations
George A. Anastassiou, Intelligent computations: Abstract fractional
calculus, inequalities, approximations
This rather brief monograph is regarding the strong fractional
analysis of Banach space valued functions of a real domain. Our
results are of abstract: analytic inequalities, Korovkin approximation
of functions and neural network approximation. The chapters are
self-contained and can be read independently. This concise monograph
is suitable to be used in related graduate classes and many research
projects. An extensive list of references is given per chapter. The
book's results are expected to find applications in many areas of pure
and applied mathematics. As such this monograph is suitable for
various researchers and seminars and to be in all science and
engineering libraries.

Curves are seductive. These smooth, organic lines and surfaces---like
those of the human body---appeal to us in an instinctive, visceral way
that straight lines or the perfect shapes of classical geometry never
could. In this large-format book, lavishly illustrated in color
throughout, Allan McRobie takes the reader on an alluring exploration
of the beautiful curves that shape our world---from our bodies to
Salvador Dali's paintings and the space-time fabric of the universe
itself.

The Center for Computational Sciences and Engineering has an immediate
opening for a postdoctoral researcher to work on the development of
computational optimization algorithms for solving computationally
expensive black-box optimization problems, in particular problems with
uncertainty. We are looking for a candidate with experience in
nonlinear optimization, including mixed-integer, derivative-free, or
global optimization, who is interested in developing new solution
approaches that integrate uncertainty quantification methods in
optimization algorithms. The candidate will work independently as
well as collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment that
includes mathematicians, computer/computational scientists, and domain
scientists. The candidate will have the opportunity to apply their
developments to exciting application areas.
