Springer Series in Operations Research and Financial Engineering,
Springer International Publishing, 302 pages, DOI 10.1007/978-3-319-
68913-5, December 2017.
This book is designed as a textbook, suitable for self-learning or for
teaching an upper-year university course on derivative-free and
blackbox optimization. The book is split into 5 parts and is designed
to be modular; any individual part depends only on the material in
Part I. Part I of the book discusses what is meant by Derivative-Free
and Blackbox Optimization, provides background material, and early
basics while Part II focuses on heuristic methods (Genetic Algorithms
and Nelder-Mead). Part III presents direct search methods (Generalized
Pattern Search and Mesh Adaptive Direct Search) and Part IV focuses on
model-based methods (Simplex Gradient and Trust Region). Part V
discusses dealing with constraints, using surrogates, and bi-objective
optimization. End of chapter exercises are included throughout as well
as 15 end of chapter projects and over 40 figures. Benchmarking
techniques are also presented in the appendix. The book opens up with
a foreword by John Dennis.

Workshop: Reducing Dimensions and Cost for UQ in Complex Systems
Isaac Newton Institute, Cambridge
5 - 9 March 2018
https://www.newton.ac.uk/event/unqw03
Registration for this workshop is open through to January 3, 2018
Uncertainty quantification (UQ) in complex mathematical models is a
huge computational challenge for many reasons. Simple UQ tasks such as
the estimation of statistical properties of system outputs often
require multiple calls to a deterministic solver. A single solver call
is already very expensive for complex mathematical models. Advanced UQ
tasks such as sensitivity and reliability analysis, parameter
identification, or optimal control and design often involve several
layers of increasing complexity where each layer requires the
performance of a specific UQ task. This workshop will address
efficient numerical and statistical methods for reducing the overall
cost of solving discrete problems that arise in UQ studies, focusing
on methodologies that reduce the dimension of the problems to be
solved. Talks will be organised around topics such as: multilevel and
multifidelity methods; reduced basis methods; dimension reduction
strategies; low rank and tensor methods; challenges in Gaussian
process emulation, and active subspaces. Workshop speakers and
participants will be encouraged to explore connections between these
topics. There will also be two contributed poster
presentations. Please indicate on the registration form if you are
interested in presenting a poster. A limited amount of funding may be
available to support PhD students.

We invite contributions to the minisymposium entitled 'Nonlocal Models
and Methods for Material Failure and Damage Simulation' at the 6th
European Conference on Computational Mechanics (ECCM 6), to be held
jointly with the 7th European Conference on Computational Fluid
Dynamics (ECFD 7) on June 11-15, 2018 in Glasgow, UK.
The goal of this minisymposium is to bring together a diverse group of
researchers working with nonlocal formulations of continuum mechanics,
such as peridynamics, nonlocal elasticity and plasticity, and
strain-gradient elasticity, as well as with other related nonlocal
models, to discuss advances in modeling, computational methods, and
numerical simulations.
The ECCM 6 conference will be part of the 25th Anniversary of the
European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences
(ECCOMAS), and it represents one of the three main scientific events
of ECCOMAS organized every four years. This minisymposium will promote
collaboration between various nonlocal communities, and it will also
allow further interaction between the European nonlocal community and
nonlocal communities in other geographical regions.

As much as the 85 percent of the matter content of the Universe is
made of an unknown elusive component known as dark matter and its
nature represents one of the most outstanding and studied problems in
physics. Strong gravitational lensing is key and unique astrophysical
tool to constrain the properties of dark matter. Taking advantage of
current and future gravitational lensing observations requires the
development of new fast lens modelling codes. For this reason the Max
Planck Institute for Astrophysics invites applications for a phD or a
postdoctoral position in the area of computational gravitational
lensing. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Simona Vegetti on
the development of new gravitational lens modelling codes and
applications in the field of galaxy formation. S/he will have strong
computational skills, while knowledge in the field of gravitational
lensing or astrophysics is not required.
The successful candidate will join the vibrant research environment of
the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Garching.
The position is available from February 2018, but the starting date is
negotiable. The appointment will be initially for 2+1 years, with the
possibility of a fourth year extension, pending on performance.
Interested candidates are invited to apply by sending a curriculum
vitae, a publication list, a two page statement of their scientific
experience and interests to the email address
svegetti@mpa-garching.mpg.de. The candidates should also arrange for 3
letters of reference to be sent to the same email address.
Applications are due by January 1 2018, but later applications will be
considered until the position is filled.

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship on novel
preconditioners for radial basis function linear systems, under the
supervision of Dr Jennifer Pestana and Dr Alison Ramage, at the
Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of
Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland. The project will suit students with
interests in numerical analysis and linear algebra.
The studentship covers UK/EU tuition fees and comes with an annual
tax- free stipend at the standard UK rate. International students who
can fund the difference between UK/EU and International fee rates are
also encouraged to apply.
The project will begin 1 March, 2018, or earlier by arrangement.
Further details are available at

Informal enquiries to Jennifer Pestana (jennifer.pestana@strath.ac.uk)
are welcome.

Subject: New co-Editor-in-Chief, Advances in Computational Mathematics
Just to let you know that I have recently joined Karsten Urban as the
new co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Advances in Computational
Mathematics (ACOM), published by Springer. We have clarified its
scope, which emphasizes: 1) approximation theory and computational
geometry; 2) numerical analysis, modelling and simulation; 3) imaging,
signal processing and data analysis.
We encourage you, your students, and your colleagues to use ACOM as a
home for high-quality numerical analysis and scientific computing; you
will see many familiar names on the editorial board. Soon authors
will also be able to upload code or data with their article. We also
have special issues, so please reach out if you would like to propose
one.
