Subject: 2017 Babuska Prize Awarded
In December 2017, the Czech Association for Mechanics and the Union of
Czech Mathematicians and Physicists again awarded the I. Babuska Prize
for the best work in computational mechanics and computational
mathematics submitted by students and young scientists. The Prize
winner for 2017 is Dr Jan Zapletal from the Faculty of Electrical
Engineering and Computer Science of the VSB-Technical University of
Ostrava. The work honored is his PhD thesis The boundary element
method for shape optimization in 3D.
Further winners were delivered diplomas of honor. The second position
was awarded to Dr Martin Hasal from the same Faculty for his PhD
thesis Numerical solution of the Stokes-Brinkman equation by the usage
of the mixed finite element method.
The third position belongs to Dr Jan Papez from the Faculty of
Mathematics and Physics of Charles University in Prague who presented
his PhD thesis Algebraic error in matrix computations in the context
of numerical solution of partial differential equations.
Further diplomas of honor were delivered to MS theses. The first
position in this category was taken by Johanna R. Bloecher from the
Faculty of Environmental Sciences of the Czech University of Life
Sciences in Prague. The second was Eva Vidlickova from the Faculty of
Mathematics and Physics of Charles University in Prague and the third
position belongs to Marek Tyburec from the Faculty of Civil
Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague.
The Prize was established in 1994 by an outstanding Czech
mathematician Ivo Babuska, now at the Institute for Computational
Engineering and Sciences, University of Texas, Austin, TX.

We would like to announce the next winter school on hierarchical
matrices.

Hierarchical matrices offer an efficient approach to handling
non-local operators resulting, e.g., from the discretization of an
integral equation or the inversion of a partial differential
equation. They rely on a decomposition of a matrix into sub-matrices
of low numerical rank that can be represented in factorized
form. Using this representation, we can perform operations like the
matrix-vector multiplication, matrix multiplication, inversion,
factorization, the evaluation of matrix functions, or even the
solution of certain matrix equations in almost linear complexity.
The winter school is split into two parts: lectures present the
fundamental concepts and algorithms, while practical exercises allow
the participants to experience the methods first-hand, get acquainted
with the open-source library H2Lib (http://www.h2lib.org), and discuss
specific questions and applications with experts in the field.

The IMA and the University of Birmingham are pleased to announce the
Sixth IMA Conference on Numerical Linear Algebra and Optimization. The
meeting is being held in cooperation with SIAM, and SIAM Activity
Groups on Optimization and on Linear Algebra. SIAM members will
receive the IMA members' registration rate.
The success of modern codes for large-scale optimization is heavily
dependent on the use of effective tools of numerical linear
algebra. On the other hand, many problems in numerical linear algebra
lead to linear, nonlinear or semidefinite optimization problems. The
purpose of the conference is to bring together researchers from both
communities and to find and communicate points and topics of common
interest. Conference topics include any subject that could be of
interest to both communities, such as: Direct and iterative methods
for large sparse linear systems; Eigenvalue computation and
optimization; Large-scale nonlinear and semidefinite programming;
Effect of round-off errors, stopping criteria, embedded iterative
procedures; Optimization issues for matrix polynomials; Fast matrix
computations; Compressed/sparse sensing; PDE-constrained optimization;
Distributed computing and optimization; and Applications and real time
optimization.
Mini-symposium proposals and contributed talks are invited on all
aspects of numerical linear algebra and optimization. Mini-symposium
proposals should be submitted to conferences@ima.org.uk by 31 January
2018. A mini-symposium consists of up to four speakers. For emerging
topics the mini-symposium can be extended to at most two sessions on a
single topic (maximum eight speakers). Organisers will be advised of
acceptance by 12 February 2018. Contributed talks and mini-symposia
talks will be accepted on the basis of a one page extended abstract
which should be submitted by 28 February 2018 online at

Subject: Research Fellow Position, High-Frequency Wave Modelling
Applications are invited for the above joint post to work with Prof
Gregor Tanner (University of Nottingham) and Dr David Chappell
(Nottingham Trent University) on an EPSRC - funded project entitled
Transfer operator methods for modelling high-frequency wave fields -
advancements through modern functional and numerical analysis. The
project will advance a method for calculating energy flow in complex
structures developed in Nottingham, the so-called Dynamical Energy
Analysis (DEA). The method is used for computing noise and vibration
in vehicle structures as well as electromagnetic field distributions
in complex cavities. DEA exhibits a rich underlying mathematical
structure based on transfer operators originally arising in the theory
of chaotic dynamical systems.
A good knowledge of computational wave modelling is essential. In
addition, a background in more than one of the following areas is
highly desirable: short wavelength asymptotic methods, numerical
solutions of PDEs, programming, numerical linear algebra, numerical
analysis, and functional analysis. This full-time position is
available from 1 February 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter and
will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of thee
years. The post is a joint appointment (50:50 split) between UoN and
NTU and the person appointed will be based at UoN and NTU
campuses. The salary will be 32548 to 34520 (GBP) per annum.
