Subject: Wayne Cowell (1926 - 2021)
Dr. Wayne Cowell, a member of the Mathematics and Computer Science
Division at Argonne National Laboratory for most of his professional
life, passed away February 24, 2021. During that time he made a
lasting impact on computational science and on the scientists around
him.
In 1971 Wayne convinced the National Science Foundation to fund the
National Activity to Test Software (NATS) project between Argonne and
two universities: Stanford and the University of Texas at Austin. The
plan was to produce a set of subroutines with a uniform style and
naming convention. The subroutines would be based on the best
available algorithms, implemented at Argonne, and distributed to test
sites. Once the testing was completed, the subroutines were certified
as being robust, reliable, and portable. These ideas were new in 1971.
The NATS project produced the EISPACK and FUNPACK packages. The
success of this project laid the groundwork for Argonne's reputation
as a center for the development of high-quality numerical software.
Wayne is remembered as a kind, considerate colleague and a promoter of
mathematical software by the visitors to Argonne. His success in
promoting collaboration between Argonne and other research
institutions was key to the development of mathematical software.
Wayne edited the book "Sources and Development of Mathematics
Software" that details many of the lessons learned during the early

The Centre de recherches mathematiques (CRM) and Universite
Laval are pleased to announce the 2021 CRM Summer School "Solving
large systems efficiently in multiphysics numerical simulations",
which will take place ONLINE from May 31 to June 10, 2021. The goal of
this summer school is to introduce fundamental solver techniques for
dealing with large-scale coupled problems in numerical
simulations. Participants will be expected to have a working
understanding of linear algebra, differential equations (ordinary and
partial) and basic Fourier analysis, roughly at the undergraduate
level. The theoretical portion will consist of the following three
mini-courses, which will be accompanied by exercise sessions:
- Stationary Methods and Multiphysics (Hamdi Tchelepi and Felix Kwok)
- Domain Decomposition Methods (Victorita Dolean)
- Multigrid Methods (Scott MacLachlan)
In addition, there will be seminar talks on advanced techniques and
applications by four invited speakers (Andrea Franceschini, Louis
Poirel, Carmen Rodrigo and Julien Salomon). All lectures will be given
in English. The summer school is free of charge, but prior

We are seeking a postdoctoral appointee with strong mathematical and
computational background who will pursue research at the intersection
of machine learning (ML), uncertainty quantification, and applied
mathematics. We seek a creative problem solver with fundamental
knowledge in probability theory, differential equations, optimization,
and experience in scientific computing, evidenced by publications and
codes. The postdoctoral appointee will contribute towards development
and deployment of advanced ML methods with connections to random
dynamical systems and differential equations. Specific developments
include exploring neural networks (NNs) in the continuous-layer limit
as differential equations, augmenting NNs with probabilistic weights,
as well as crafting advanced regularization and dimensionality
reduction methods. The work involves regular interaction with the
three-member project team, as well as collaboration with application
teams across Sandia. The project is expected to result in publications
in peer-reviewed journals and impact in understanding the advantages
and limitations of probabilistic NNs viewed as random dynamical
systems.

The successful candidate will be associated with the applications

Germany) and will work on the development and optimization of
scientific HPC simulation codes for upcoming Exascale computer
architectures, primarily in the field of electronic structure theory

Prof. Karsten Reuter at the Fritz Haber Institute.
The applicant should hold a PhD in Physics, Computer Science, applied

experience with large, distributed software projects and
high-performance computing are required. We offer the opportunity to
work on state-of-the-art numerical algorithms, leading HPC codes and
latest supercomputer technology and to maintain close collaborations
with the scientists and method developers at the Fritz Haber Institute
and its international partners. Knowledge in GPU programming,
e.g. with CUDA or OpenACC, and basic familiarity with the numerics of
electronic-structure theory is considered as a plus, but is not

The position is framed within the DFG funded project "Computational
Multiscale Methods for the Inverse Estimation of Effective Properties
of Poroelastic Tissue", a collaboration between the WIAS and the Chair
of Computational Mathematics of the University of Augsburg (Head:
Prof. Dr. Daniel Peterseim). The project aims to develop
computational multiscale models and inversion algorithms to support
modern clinical imaging techniques based on Magnetic Resonance
Elastography (MRE). MRE combines magnetic resonance images with
mathematical and physical models in order to recover, in vivo and
non-invasively, information about the elastic behavior and mechanical
parameters of human tissues. The purpose of the project is to develop
novel mathematical descriptions of vascularized tissues and efficient
computational tools for numerical simulations and for the solution of
related inverse problems.
The research will build on the existing collaboration with the MRE
group at the Department of Radiology of the Charite-Universiatsmedizin
Berlin (Prof. Dr. Ingolf Sack) and the Department Diagnostische und
Interventionelle Radiologie of the Universitatsklinikum Augsburg
(Prof. Dr. med. Thomas Kroncke). We are looking for candidates with a
master's degree and a strong background in computational mathematics
and scientific computing, with interest in medical applications. Prior

Research activities of this Ph.D. position focus on the novel methods
to construct physically meaningful models solely from data using the
framework of port-Hamiltonian systems. The research tackles a
fundamental question: to guarantee the physical behavior of a coupled

equations derived from first-principles. To ensure an efficient

Uppsala university, Dept of Information Technology has three PhD
student positions open. The research projects for the advertised
positions will be within the areas of optimization and mathematical
modeling of dynamical systems, both from data and underlying physical
principles. They feature for instance machine learning, Bayesian
estimation, and optimization based on models in the form of partial
differential equations.
The projects proposed include:
