Extrapolation Methods

welcome and invite both junior and more senior researchers interesting
in learning more about these exciting and relevant techniques to apply
to the program.
Solving systems of nonlinear equations and optimization problems are
pervasive issues throughout the mathematical sciences with
applications in many areas. Acceleration and extrapolation methods
have emerged as a key technology to solve these problems efficiently
and robustly. The simple underlying idea of these methods is to
recombine previous approximations in a sequence to determine the next
term or approximation. This approach has been applied repeatedly and
from different angles to numerous problems over the last several
decades. Important methods including epsilon algorithms and Anderson
acceleration were introduced throughout the early and mid-20th
century, and are now common in many applied fields including
optimization, machine learning, computational chemistry, materials,
and climate sciences. Within the last decade, theoretical advances on
convergence, acceleration mechanisms, and the development of unified
frameworks to understand these methods have come to light, yet our
understanding remains incomplete. Fascinating links exist with methods
such as Nesterov acceleration and other momentum-based approaches that
have been developed in the fields of optimization and machine learning
in the past decades. These links and connections with dynamical
systems appear to be promising directions for further insight that
remain largely unexplored. The goals of this workshop include
assessing the state of the art and exploring connections between
closely related methods that may have been independently developed;
connecting theory to practice by fostering interaction between
theorists and applied practitioners; and, encouraging new and
continuing collaborations between participants.

The XX edition of the JLL School is devoted to the challenges of
"Mathematical and Computational Modelling Across the Scales"
pertaining to physical problems involving micro-, meso-, macro- and
multi-scale phenomena. The thematic focus is broad, encompassing
contributions on modelling and numerical methods, for direct and
inverse problems, with applications spanning from wave propagation to
composite materials and complex fluids, from quantum mechanics to
biological and building simulations. The programme consists of four

keynote lectures (https://ehf-jll- 2023.cimne.com/keynote_lectures) on
the topics of the School. The School is primarily addressed to PhD
students and Postdoctoral fellows in applied mathematics and

We are thrilled to announce the opening of the 15th AIMMS-MOPTA
Optimization Modeling Competition. The competition is organized by
the conference organizers of MOPTA and AIMMS. The first phase's
submission deadline is May 31, 2023, 23:59 Eastern Time. Finalists are
expected to attend and present their results at the 2023 MOPTA
Conference to be held on August 16-18, 2023, at Lehigh University,
Bethlehem, PA, USA. The goal of the competition this year is to plan
locations of electric vehicle charging stations under uncertainty. The
problem description is posted on the competition website:

Information on eligibility, registration, submission, and competition
format are posted on the competition website. Teams of at most three
students can participate and should list a faculty advisor. The team
leader must be a graduate student, though the other team members can

institution during the Spring term of the 2022-2023 Academic
Year. Students with any background are eligible. Collaboration between
students from different departments is strongly encouraged. Each
finalist team will receive free registration for the conference for up
to two team members. As the conference is international, so is the
competition. Teams from all over the world can participate, as long as
at least one team member can come to the conference, should the team
make it to the final round. The official language of the competition
is English.
