Subject: Biharmonic Equations with Periodic Boundary Conditions
Has anyone worked with
- biharmonic equations with PERIODIC boundary conditions? -
I should like to know in which REAL problems these equations have
been met and to see, if it is possible, an example of them.
Many thanks in advance for the help.

Subject: Large Numerical Integration
I'm interested in solving the following problem:
Let A be a positive definite square matrix of order n. Compute
the numerical integration of
exp^{- x' A x}
where x' is the transposed of vector x, and x ranges over the
product domain [a_1,b_1] x ...x [a_n, b_n].
The crux is that the value of n can be as large as 100.
Thanks in advance,
Christian Lantuejoul (lantu@cg.ensmp.fr)

Subject: Multivariate Polynomial Interpolation
Who has information concerning the following multivariate problem?
In the book of J. Walsh, "Interpolation and Approximation", on page 61
a theorem (nr. 6) is given stating the uniform convergence of the Newton
interpolating series for an asymptotic sequence of interpolation points
and in the interior of a lemniscate. Does anyone know of an analogous
result in the multivariate case. I'm thinking of poly-lemniscates, maybe
grids of interpolation points built from asymptotic coordinate sequences
in each variable separately, ...
Please let me know any basic and/or advanced results with the exact
references to the literature. Many thanks in advance.

Subject: Conference in New Zeland
International Conference on Scientific Computation and
Differential Equations
Auckland, New Zealand
Monday 3rd - Friday 7th, January,1993
Preliminary Announcement
Introduction
The purpose of this conference is multifarious. First it is
intended to be a continuation of the successful conferences
held on the numerical solution of differential equations in
Albuquerque, Toronto, London and Helsinki in 1986, 1988,
1989, and 1990, respectively. Secondly it is intended as a
celebration of Professor John Butcher's sixtieth birthday and
his outstanding contributions in the area of numerical
methods for the solution of ordinary differential equations
of initial value type. For these reasons the main thrust of
the conference is in the area of differential equations.
However, the third purpose of this conference is to bring
together applied mathematicians in New Zealand and Australia
who have a computational interest in the subject. Thus
talks on any area of scientific computing are most welcome.
Topics
The major theme of this conference is the ubiquitousness of
the differential equation in Applied Mathematics and will
focus in part on both modelling and computational aspects in
this respect. Topics covered will include numerical methods
for the solution of initial value and boundary value problems
with or without algebraic constraints; delay differential
equations, Volterra integral equations, applications to time-
dependent partial differential equations and practical
algorithms.
As well as these, we invite contributions in other areas of
scientific computing, especially those which impinge either
directly or indirectly on the field of differential
equations. Examples of this include numerical quadrature,
linear and nonlinear equations, extrapolation processes and
simulation techniques. We particularly welcome talks which
consider algorithmic developments in a parallel environment.
Organising Committee, with e-mail addresses
Dr Kevin Burrage (Director) burrage@mat.aukuni.ac.nz
Dr Horst Gerlach (Secretary) gerlach@mat.aukuni.ac.nz

It will be most helpful for our planning if we know as soon
as possible who has an interest in taking part in this
meeting. Consequently, notices of interest or intent to
participate should be sent to Horst Gerlach either by
electronic mail or airmail. Even at this early stage, we
wish to know who is likely to be presenting a lecture to the
conference and we ask you to let Horst also know what your
likely intentions are in this respect. Horst will be glad to
answer questions not only about the conference but also about
tourist possibilities in New Zealand.
Copies of this announcement are being made available through
na-net and by traditional mail to a number of additional
people. Please copy this announcement and pass it on to
people we may have overlooked. Even if you have already told
us of your interest in taking part in the meeting, please
confirm your continued interest to Horst Gerlach.
Additional information can be attained from the Director.
However please note that, from 1st March 1991, his address
will be

Subject: Position at Iowa State
Numerical Analysis Position at Iowa State University
Senior or entry level
Iowa State University is searching for a senior level numerical
analyst to fill a position beginning fall 1991. We have recently expanded
the search to include lower level (tenure track) candidates. At either
level, the successful candidate will have ample support and opportunity
to develop an important research program.
The candidate should be interested in an area of application of
numerical analysis, preferably one present at Iowa State in the
physical sciences or engineering.
If you are a good candidate or know of a good candidate, please
notify me via regular mail or email at cornette@iastate.edu, or inform
the candidate directly if you think he or she would apply without further
prompting. Applications should be sent to Dr. Howard Levine, Chair,
Department of Mathematics, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa 50011.
The screening process will begin on January 21, but applications will
be accepted until the position is filled.
